ACCESS - (i.e. security, ease of signing on, etc.) The operation of reading or writing stored information

BIT - The smallest computer storage unit
BUG - A glitch in the computer causing it to malfunction. Actually an errant moth gave it it's name
BYTE - A computer storage unit containing 8 bits.

CCR - Continuity of Care Record - A transportable record of a patient's most relevant clinical data
CDR - Clinical Data Repository - The storage place for all clinical data such as lab tests, radiology reports etc.
CONTENT - The clinical information specifically designed for physician documentation purposes
COW - Computer on Wheels - A mobile computer that can be moved from place to place. May include medication drawers

DEMO--REAL TIME - A demonstration of an EMR that is up and running at the time of the demo
DEMO--SCREEN SHOTS - A demonstration of an EMR that includes examples of software, but not an actual live demo
DOWNTIME--PLANNED - Computer shut down that is required for some planned adjustments in the programming
DOWNTIME--UNPLANNED - Computer shut down that is unplanned due to some unusual event or problem

ELECTRONIC BILLING SOFTWARE - Sending bills electronically, without a paper copy, which will speed up processing and payment
EMR - Electronic Medical Record - The method of maintaining all patients clinical information in a flexible and convenient format

FREE TEXT - The use of non predetermined content. It is not manipulatable data and therefore cumbersome

GIGABYTE - One billion bytes of electronic information
GO LIVE - The completion of the installation process of a piece of software so it can be clinically used

HAND HELD - An electronic device small enough to be held in the hand and light enough to be practicle
HARDWARE - The physical devices required to use software, such as printers, screens and desk top units
HIPAA COMPLIANT - Practice in is accordance with the federal standards for transporting electronic information
HL-7 - Programming language standard in place for software applications to communicate

INBOX - Incoming messages through your email program
INTEGRATION - The ability to have different software programs connected together to be more electronically efficient
INTERFACE - The ability to take different software applications and connect them so they can share information

JAVA - A simple programming language used for writing programs that are downloaded from the WWW.

KIOSK - A secure computer in the waiting room for patients to enter information directly into their electronic medical record

LINK - A connection between two or more locations for the purpose of transmitting and receiving data

MAINTANENCE - Bug fixes and upgrades for any piece of software purchased. Generally a separate annual cost of 15-20%
MANIPULABLE DATA - Information that can be collected and used in reports and research
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE - The software in a physician office that manages scheduling, coding, and billing
MEGABYTE - One million bytes of electronic information; not much now a days

NAVIGATION SYSTEM - A simplified way to move around the software program without being a computer programmer yourself
NETWORK - The ability to communicate from computer to computer. Also sharing an internet connection

OPTIMIZATION - Following training and implementation it is a good idea to periodically reevaluate goals of implementation
ORDER SETS - Pre-determined groups of orders based on diagnoses

PATIENT ACCESS - Allowing the patient to be involved directly with the computer and it's services
PMS - Patient Management System - PMS - The software in a physician office that manages scheduling, coding, and billing
PHR - Personal Health Record -Summarized clinical information maintained by the patient online
PORTAL - An method of entering a computer program; the first computer screen visible to the user

QWERTY KEYBOARD - The standard English keyboard
QUALITY CONTROL - The operational techniques and activities used to fulfill and verify quality requirements
QUALITY ASSURANCE - The processes and methods used to ensure quality

RAM - Random Access Memory - The most common computer memory which can be used by programs to perform necessary tasks while the computer is on.

SCANNING - The process to incorporate written material into an electronic program. It cannot be manipulated
SECURITY - Processes to ensure the privacy of all patient information
SERVER - A central computer, or group of computers that adds and manipulates the content of the program
SOFTWARE - An electronic program which has all the content material. It is displayed using hardware
 T
TABLET - A mobile computer smaller than a lap top and larger than a hand held. Requires wireless connection
TEMPLATE - A previously designed "script" that can be filled in with patient information. A good way to be complete
TERABYTE - One trillion bytes of electronic information. It sounds like a lot now, but won't be in the near future.
THIN CLIENT - A screen and keyboard, but without the computer, which, instead is centrally located
TOUCH SCREEN - The ability to use the computer by touching various areas of the screen instead of typing etc.
TRAINING--ELECTRONIC - Some programs use the computer itself to train the user. There is no human contact
TRAINING--LIVE - A live instructor performs the training necessary to learn how to use the computer
TRANSCRIPTION - Typing dictated notes. This is not the ideal way of imputing information since it cannot be manipulated

UPGRADES - EMR's are dynamic and have to adjust to improvements periodically. These are called upgrades

VENDOR NEUTRAL - Not having any financial or other involvement with Vendors that would bias choosing the best product
VOICE ACTIVATION - The ability to use speech to transfer information into the EMR
 W
WINDOWS - A personal computer (PC) operating system with a graphical user interface
WIRELESS - Radio-based systems that allow transmission of information without a physical connection
